What are the benefits?

2008 roundup:

WHAT a year!  Our most sincere thanks to all of you who gave generously of your time and energy, opened your homes to international guests or even just renewed your dues and kept a lively interest in what your SCL organization was currently planning. Now it’s that time again – time to renew your membership in your vibrant, exciting Sister Cities of Louisville organization.  We have included a membership brochure for your consideration which includes our new mission statement and tag line.  Thank you! We had a year packed with excellent projects, solid, successful programs, and exciting events.  To list only a few of the highlights –

·      In February the jazz ensemble Garage Sale from La Plata, Argentina was invited to be part of the 2008 University of Louisville Jazz Fest and entertained hundreds of school children and jazz aficionados in Louisville and other locations in Kentucky including CafĂ© Classico, the Jazz Factory and the Galt House.

·      In March Sacred Heart Academy hosted a group of fourteen high school students and two teachers from the Gymnasium Nieder Olm high school in Mainz, Germany. In June a reciprocal group of students from Sacred Heart Academy will visit Mainz.

·      In April Louisville welcomed a delegation of high ranking officials including the Executive Vice Mayor from JiuJiang, China. The delegation toured some of Louisville’s world renown sights such as UPS and Churchill Downs.

·      Over the summer months we had many exchanges; three Louisville artists traveled to Mainz, Germany to participate in ‘Art in the City’; we hosted the Montpellier Work Exchange Program, with 13 students who came from France for a one month internship program; we also organized many educational exchanges between Montpellier, Mainz, Tamale, Quito and JiuJiang with local high schools and universities.

·      In August through a partnership with Healing the Children we saw the arrival of Johana Ona, a five year old from Quito, Ecuador that was born with no ears. Thanks to donated care from our wonderful medical community Johana now has a right ear enabling her to hear and speak for the first time.

·      In September we welcomed five official delegates representing the City of Leeds and Moortown Golf Club – the location of the first ever Ryder Cup held in Europe. They brought with them an exciting collection of over 30 historic photographs and memorabilia  from the 1929 Ryder Cup..

·      In November delegates from Montpellier, France and Leeds, UK  participated in a Waging Peace in our Communities Summit, the 2008 Festival of Faiths, and the Mayor’s Neighborhood Summit. They returned home determined to continue the discussions and efforts begun in Lyons and continued in Louisville to work on ways to wage peace in their communities.

·      In December we hosted a delegation of physicians from Russia as part of the Open World program, the delegates visited our leading medical institutions and learned best practices during their visit.

Whew! A lot of activity to report, and those were just the “highlights”. Of course throughout the year, we also published our quarterly newsletter, jam packed with interesting information, and kept our members current through our online broadcasts, which provide information on city-specific and community events in which SCL participates. This year we have launched a Blog, Twitter and Facebook sight so you can stay even more connected; expect real time updates including messages direct from our Sister Cities! We greatly appreciate your interest in and support of your Sister Cities of Louisville organization.  Remember, SCL is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization, which may entitle you to a tax benefit for the amount of your paid membership. Please remit by January 31st for your 2009 membership renewal, effective through December 31, 2009.
