From the outset, educational exchange opportunities have played a fundamental role in Sister Cities programs and initiatives. SCL works with both local public and private collegiate, university, and secondary schools to create exemplary international exchange opportunities. SCL offers several resources to aid students in learning about other cultures.
SCL Culture Kits
SCL is pleased to offer Culture Kits to local teachers for use in their classrooms. The Culture Kits include music, clothing, books, pictures, maps, and other items from each of our Sister Cities. Each kit also has a binder with useful information including facts, figures, recipes, and other cultural materials. These Culture Kits provide teachers with current and authentic resources not accessible to most classrooms. The kits are designed to be used by students and teachers to enhance multicultural and diverse experiences. These kits help teachers facilitate student-initiated inquiry and hands-on learning. If you are interested in checking out a Culture Kit for one week, please contact the SCL office at sclou@sclou.org, or by phone (502)-574-3397.
In a special project with SCL, JCPS educators and Bellarmine University graduate students designed and sequenced activities and lessons for teachers and their students with the SCL Culture Kits. Each lesson is aligned to Kentucky Core Content and includes a rubric for evaluating student learning. The lessons may be found on the Kentucky Council on Economic Education's webpage.
SCL now offers Culture Kits online! The online culture kits are available as a Adobe Acrobat file (requires the free Adobe Reader program) and include much of the basic information found in the hard copies of the kits. An annotated list of useful websites is also included in the online culture kits.
